Investment management for family offices, from an outsourced chief investment officer.

Some families already have an office. What they need is an investment partner that manages the portfolio, does the diligence, and works alongside the staff and advisors the family already trusts. Yale Capital serves single-family offices in that role.

What an outsourced CIO does for a family office

An outsourced chief investment officer (OCIO) manages a family office's investment program without the family hiring an internal investment team. The OCIO sets the allocation with the family, selects and monitors managers, executes and rebalances, and reports on the whole portfolio. The family keeps control of the decisions that matter to it and hands off the daily work of managing the assets.

How we work with your office

  • Investment policy and allocation.

We draft or update the investment policy statement with your principals and set an allocation on the endowment model: broad diversification, meaningful use of alternatives, long horizons, and after-tax discipline.

  • Private deal evaluation.

Clients are regularly brought private deals. We evaluate what you are shown: the terms, the fees, the liquidity, and the fit with your policy, and we give you an independent read. We do not sell or recommend private market products.

  • Execution and rebalancing.

We implement the allocation across your custodians and accounts, and we rebalance with cash flows and thresholds.

  • Risk management.

We monitor concentration, liquidity, leverage, and manager risk across the whole portfolio and report on it in plain terms.

  • Consolidated reporting.

We deliver one report across every account, manager, and entity, on your schedule, in the format your office and its accountants use.

  • Coordination with your team.

We coordinate with your CPA on realized gains, loss harvesting, and the tax calendar, work with your CFO, attorneys, and trustees, and join your investment committee when you want us there. Yale Capital does not provide tax or legal advice.

What your office keeps, and what we take on

Your family and its investment committee keep governance: the investment policy, the risk tolerance, and final approval of the decisions the policy reserves to you. We take on the investment program within that policy: the research, the manager relationships, the trading, the rebalancing, and the reporting. Engagements can be discretionary within your written guidelines or advisory, with your office retaining approval on each decision. Where a family office also wants administrative support, our personal CFO team coordinates bill payment, cash management, and wires under the same roof.

Common questions from family offices

  • Do we have to move custody or change our accountants?

In most cases, no. We can typically work through your existing custodians and with your existing CPA and attorneys, and our consolidated reporting is built on the accounts you already have. We confirm the specifics with your office before any engagement begins.

  • How is an outsourced CIO engagement different from Yale Capital's multi-family office service?

The scope. Our multi-family office service provides the full family office function to families that do not operate their own office. An outsourced CIO engagement provides the investment function to a family office that already exists, under that office's governance. The investment approach is the same in each case.

  • Is there a minimum?

New relationships generally begin at $10 million in investable assets. Family office engagements typically involve larger, more complex portfolios, and we scope each one directly with the office.
